MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.

i ' —— ,-■ The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last' evening. Present: Mr. E. P. Kishworth' (Mayor), and Councillors'. A/M'Bain,A¥~. Meldrum, J. Braseli;- j7.J. Mitchell,: W: T. Strand, W. T. Cotton, ■ — Dempsey, A. J. West, and "A. J. Hobbs.* Mr. R. W. Holnies intimated that the commission to deal with the report oh .hew bridges on the Wellington-Waira-rapa-road would be hold on 10th August.

The Chief Inspector of Explosives forwarded a draft copy of the bylaw in connection with the newregulation under the Explosives Act, 1920. - Councillors Mitchell and Strand were appointed a committee to. report upon the qnestion.

The Department of' Public Health reported on the condition of a house in Prince'sstreet, recommending structural alterations. The report ,\vas referred to the engineer, with power to act.

§ The Hutt River Board forwarded an account for the council's proportion of the protective work carried .out at Melling; stating that the work had cost £37. The amount was passed for payment.

Tho Wellington Hockey Association requested permission to charge for. admission to the Hutt Recreation Ground on the 13fch and 20th instants. The clerk pointed out that permission had already been granted on five occasions. Councillor AVest stated' that on two. occasions the permission had not been taken advantage of, and on this ground the application was granted.

Mr. H. F. Lowe applied for a renewal of the lease/of the council's cottage on /the main street. The question was referred to the Finance Committee.

A. firm of solicitors, on behalf of a client, drew attention to the bad states of repair of Wilford street, and requested that improvements be made. The engineer explained that he was now doing the ordinary repairs on the street. The clerk was instructed to report accordingly-

Messrs., CPBrien and Bransfield requestod payment of the balance of 25 per cent, owipg' on the Hall-Jones Settlement contract, otherwise the work of laying the mains would be held up 'indefinitely. It was decided: to do certain patching work, and also to ascertain the liability of the council in regard to persons-using thePEteps. .- Permission was grantee} the Lower Hutt Municipal Brass Band to hold a sacred concert on l4th August. '» _ The Wellington Automobile Association protested against persons making % single trip being charged a license fee. The clerk stated that persons making only one*trip wore not charged a fee. It was decided to reply that the porson, on whose behalf the complaint had been made, had travelled more than once through the borough, und* also that the association was in error in saying, that Lower Hutt carriers were nob charged a fee in Wellington. .

Messrs. O'Brien and Bransfield ask.cd for extra payment on account of their contract on the Hall-Jones Settlement, though they admitted they could not make a legal claim. It was decided to request the ■ contractors to forward a definite statement regarding increased prices paid for labour and material.

The Mayor gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution restricting the granting of permission to ratepayers to connect their premises with the gas service.
