CONFERENCE REPORT

FUTURE MEETINGS.

LONDON, 6th August.

The official . report of the Imperial Conference states that in dealing with Empire settlenient, the Conference recommended the Dominion Governments to consider how far their existing legislation on land settlement, soldier settlement, and immigration may require modification or ■ expansion, in, order to secure effective co-operation, 'and recommended also that they should work out proposals for discussion with the Imperial Government.

The Conference recommended that representatives T)f the Patent Offices in the Dominions should, at an early date, consider a system of granting patents values throughout/the Empire.

Several plenary meetings were devoted to the proposed constitutional conference. It was resolved that continuous consultation can only be secured by a substantial improvement in communication between the component parts of the Empire; that having regard to constitutional development since 1917, no advantage is to be gained by holding a constitutional conference, and that the Prime Ministers of Great Britain, India, and the Dominions should aim at meeting annually or at such longer intervals as may prove feasible. It was also agreed that the existing practice of direct communication between the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the Dominions' .Premier, as well as the right of the latter to nominate Cabinet Ministers to reprfesent them in consultation with the Prime Minister -of the United Kingdom, should be maintained.
