INTEREST OF FRANCE
IMPORTANCE OF UNITY WITH
DOMINIONS,
PARIS; 7th August.
Prance has taken an interest in the Imperial Conference. The Journal des' Debate points out that Britain's error in dealing with the American colonies in the eighteenth century is still exer cising an influence, and adds: "The jettisoning of the Japanese Alliance proves conclusively'that Britain is prepared to ssccri.ice everything to the need of maintaining unity with the Dominions. Proaident Harding's attitude was- enomously helpful to England in modifying her attitude towards Japan." The paper congratulates Britain on determining to establish a programme of capital ships before conferring with the United States.
..The Echo do Paris referring to the Conference, says: "It shows that Britain will no longer be able to enter into important undertuiings with other Powers .until she has consulted the Dominion and Indian Governments. This means that the British will not bind themselves to any ■ precise contract inEuropean affairs. The fundamental maxim of British 1 policy.now is tbe closest co-operation with America, whereby Britain may once more play its role in the world, merely by force of naval and economic weapons."
