IN SERIOUS CONFLICT
BRITISH AND FRENCH VIEWS,
(Received August 8, 1 p.m.)
LONDON, 7tfi- August.
The Daily Express lobbyist says that the British and French' views regarding Upper Silesia are seriously ■ conflicting. Britain repudiates that reinforcements are necessary and will strenuously oppose reinforcing unless France submits more conclusive evidence. Britain declarts that the presence of French troops will lead to more serious and avoidable trouble with the Germans.^ It is under stood that Mr. Lloyd George and Lord Curzoniiave formed a definite judgment that the despatch of French reinforcements may be purely a political move, and unjustified on military grounds. The correspondent adds: "British opinion is seriously disturbed by more than a suspicion that the Poles are intriguing with France, and that graridiose schemes have been settled in advance."
The Daily Chronicle's correspondent at Paris says that since the Armistice Britain and France haye been divided politically, the divergence over Upper Silesia being the final crisis. It is doubtful if the Entente and the Alliance which won the war shall exist a week hence. French extremists,, who are in the majority, say, "Smash Germany, and all will be well."- The British say, "Smash Germany, and there Will be a universal catastrophe." By talcing Al-sace-Lorraine Germany made certain there would |je war in the_future. Mr. Lloyd George is a true friend of France, and a tl'ue guardian of British interests in opposing French madness in offering Germany the ,same dangerous reason.
