AUCKLAND DEFEATS HAWKES BAY
18 POINTS TO 3.
(II ULBORAPH.—I'F.EBS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, 6th August.
, Auckland beat Hawkes Bay by 18 points to 3. Showers fell during the morning, but there were none in the afternoon. Considering the , weather, there was an excellent attendance. The ball soon became greasy, and with the exceptionally slippery state of the ground made a good exhibition an impossibility. In the circumstances, the handling and passing of Eome of the Auckland players was remarkably good. Lang, at half, sent beautiful passes to M'Clymont, and the latter was equally accurate with transfers. Hawkes Bay at times were completely at sea. / The fielding of their backs waa very weak, and only occasionally did they/attempt passing! , '.:'•'■ fl
The first score came to Auckland within the first five minutes, Woolley crossing from a good passing run, and Davidson converting. By good • forward, rushes Hawkes Bay kept Auckland on; the defensive for a good portion of the first spell, but the local backs handled the ball in good style and successfully defended. From a forward rush Avery .".cored, and the try was converted by Davidson. Just before half-time a sweeping rush by the Hawkes Bay for wards carried the ball nearly the full length of the field,' Atkins scoring an unconverted try.. In the second spell most of the play was done with the ball on the ground, rushes and counter-rashes^ predominating. The game was fast, notwithstanding. Grey scored an unconverted try, aiid shortly afterwards Hawkes (Auckland) got across, Davidson converting. . Subsequently; the game was even. The final score was:—^Auckland, 1 38: HawKes Bay, 3. - ■ .
