CROSS-COUNTRY

CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY ; BROOKLYN^HARRIEUS

On Saturday the big event in the harrier Season, the Provincial Oross-country Championship, was held from the Hutt Park, and having regard to the wretched weather conditions, the attendance of spectators was very satisfactory. _ In all ten teams competed, the. Olympics supplying 1 four and Wellington, Scottish, and Brooklyn two each, while one individual rainier from Masterton was game enough to try Ws mettle, and ran very creditably Contrary to expectations, the start waa not exceptionally fast, the 61 runners making a fine sight .Is they passod\the grandstand. For the! grea^-Si-part of the distance to the Waiwetu I-lill, Bell led with Barclay, Campbell, Moore, and, Todd iti close attendance, but on the hill Moore assumed the load, to drop back to his original position over tho other sidfe. After proceeding some distance on the return journey, Bell, Barclay, and Todd were in the lead, abreast of each other, with Moore ou their heels. Positions altered very little until tho Racecourse was reached, when Moore made a great effort,' and, outpacing his opponents, won by 30 yards from Todd; with Bell a'close third. Following are tho results in. detail :—

Individual Championship, H. Moore (Olympic) 1, D. Todd (Brooklyn) 2, R. I. Bell (Brooklyn) 3, A. Barclay (Brooklyn) 4, 0. Campbell (Olympic) 5, A. Page (Scottish) 6.

Team Championship, Brooklyn Harriens (D. Todd, E. I. Bell, A. Barclay, and G. C. Sherwood) 1, with. 18 points, their placing being V 2, '3, 4, andi 9 respectively; Olympic Harriers, 23 points, 2; and Scottish Harriers,-3. H. Moore, the individual champion, is quite new to the running game, and is to be congratulated on his remarkable' achievement, wjiile the< Brooklyn Harriers, in spite of the fact that three of their best men were absent, showed 1 splendid team work, and would probably have done much better with all their best men in action. Q. Dentice (Brooklyn) was very unfortunate in meeting with an accident shortly after the start, but his ' place was ably filled by that lion-hearted runner, G. C. Sherwood. Bell, captain of the Brooklyn Harriers, showed laudable usefulness in looking after hi 3 team, rather than aspiring to individual honours. • ' In connection with the road race, to be held in September, Councillor W. H, Bennett baa donated a shield (in memory of his son, who was killed in the war), to be held by the winning team for one year, and this should greatly stimulate interest in the event. i '

_ The team selected to represent Wellington in .the New Zealand Cross-coun-try Championship consists of : H. Moore, D. Todd.R. I. Bell, A. Barclay, and W. Scathai-d.

Officials for Saturday's race were as follow :—Referee, Mr. "W. H. Pollock; judge, Mr. W. H, Bennett; timekeepers, Messrs. I). 0. Todd, W. H. Philp, and W. H. Ludwig; started, Mr. F. Hodgson.
