On the. motion of the Yon. Archdeacan A.. M.' Johnson, the Diocesan Synod yesterday, carried a motion expressing appreciation of the- services of the late Mr. John Martin to the Papawai Trust for.sixteen years. Mr. Johnson referred to. the late Mr. Martin'n loyal service to the Church as synodsman for Martinborough, and said that the deceased was a real man and friend. Bishop Sprott was authorised to convey to Mrs. Martin the high esteem in which her late hushand was held, and to assure her of the Synod's sympathy.

.Captain Ernest Charles Dovey, "Now Zealand Staff Corps, died on Monday at his residence, Arney-crescent, Remuera, at the. age of 52. Captain Dovey was a popular staff officer, and was well known throughout New Zealand military .circles. An old Imperial Army man, he V came to New Zealand in the early days of the defence movement, and held positions as instructor in the mounted service. He took a leading part in organising the Dominion military tournaments before the war, and on the reorganisation of the force in "Sir Alexander Godley's, time entered sthe Staff . Corps as a 1 lieutenant. In the early days of the European war he was engaged, in preparing troops for the front, and .in 1916 was adjutant at Trentham Camp. From that he went to.the front as captain of the. Staff Corps, and for some, time was commandant at Etaples. On his return he was appointed to the ordnance staff, and. became ordnance officer for the Auckland district. He in survived by Mrs. Dovey. .
