BOXING
, Considerable interest is being shovn in the opening tournament of the local Boxing Association, which is W be held at the Town H?B on Monday, 9th May. To some extent the association has catered more for amateurs than for tihe professional side of the sport, and this may be termed a good feature of the programme. In the amateur class Desmond',; the lightweight champion of New Zealand, is to meet O'Keefe, of Palmerston North, who is reported to be an exceptionally good man. Kerr, the local featherweight, is to meet Maxidox, of Hastings, the holder of the New Zealand title. Other bouts are, between Harris and Nicholas, M'Gregor and Yarker, and Pearce and 1 Rasterbolt. The final „
item is a ten-round bout between M'Ooy, the ex-champion lightweight of Australia, and Lea Murray, of Dunedin. The latter has a very fine record, both as an amateur and since as a professional, and, opposed to a good general such as M'Ooy is known to be, will hive an opportunity of demonstrating his ability. The box plan will open at tho association's office on Wednesday morning.
