THE PRICE OF BUTTER

STATEMENT BY HON. W.

NOSWORTHY,

(II TELEGEAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, This Day,

The dairy companies have reduced the selling price of their butter by a penny a. pound, according to the Hon. W. .Nosworthy, Minister for Agriculture. The price to the consumer remained unaltered, this being brought about by a subsidy of 2d per pound instead of 3d, as was the case from Ist April, andi 6d as had been the case from October last until the end of March. Provision would also be made later on to assist toward storage and interest charges upon butter which would be held in store for the purpose of ensuring supplies during 'the later winter months. When considering the price to be charged for winter butter, the dairy factories first asked a net price of 2s 4^d, but later reduced this to 2s Id. They finally have agreed to a, further reduction to 2s £-d. Observations have been kept on the amount of butter produced of late. >All the evidence available goes to show that butter made since Ist April and to be made during the remainder of the autumn 'and. early winter will be sufficient to meet Tequivements without any being available for export, which is prohibited save with the'prior consent of the Minister of Customs.
