BRITISH COAL

DANGER OF CRISIS INCREASED

REDUCTION OF WAGES

NECESSARY

MINERS TO BE GIVEN NOTICE.

(UHIMD PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.)

(RKCTBR'S fBI/ESnAH.) (Received February 28, noon.)

LONDON, 27th February.

The danger of a coal crisis appears to have increased. The coai-owners have decided to give the miners a fortnight's notice immediately after 31st March, when the industry will be decontrolled, and the los 6 incurred estimated at £2,000,000 weekly owing to trade slump. The decline of coal exports which the Government is now making good will fall upon the coal industry. It is stated the owners are of the opinion that a 20 to 25 per cent: reduction in wages is necessary "in order to put the industry on a sound economic footing"'. They favour continuation of State control at least until an agreement has been reached between the owners and the miners.
