STATE ADVANCES DEPARTMENT.

The annual picnic of the State Advances Department was held at Day's Bay under perfect weather conditions. About 130 participated in the outing, which, owing to < the efforts of the hon;. secretary (Mr. W. Auld), was very successful. The deputy-supeiintendent (Mr. W; Waddel) was present and' assisted in the sports events. Amongst the visitors was Mr. F. M. J. Walmsley, who has always taken a keen interest in thedoirigs of the staff. During the, morning a cricket match was played, when the single men defeated the married members by 82 runs. A" tennis tournament was aJso played, and was won by Mr. Scott and Miss Pearson. The results of the various races are aa follow : —looyds : A. E. Cooper (scr), 1; P. Shaw (Byds), 2. Won on the tapes. 220 yds : E. Robertson (15yds), 1; C. Russell (20yds), 2. Won easily. 75yds, ladies : Miss E. Waldie, 1; Miss Pearson, 2. A good race, won by inches. Elopement race : Miss Hobbs and Russell, 1; Miss Lerwill and Shaw, 2. Won in a canter. Combined three-legged race : Miss Pearson and Mr. Scott. Bowling at wicket (ladies) : Miss G.. Davies. Bowling competition (men) : Mr. F. Hendry. Combined teams relay .race, 220 yds : Won by ■ Mr. A. A. Pritchard's section, comprising Misses Lerwill and Pearson, and Messrs. Robertson and Bollana.
