YOUNG MAN DROWNED.

A sad drowning fatality occurred in Evans Bay yesterday morning, when a, Blight mishap to a yacht making across the bay caused a. young man named Wilfred Cheeseman to be thrown, into the water and drowned. The deceased and two brothers, Cyril and Harold Cheeseman, vrere proceeding in yacht from the Kilbirnie side of the bay oyor to Miramar to pick up other people intending to take part in a yachting cruise, and when about three hundred yards away from the Miramar Wharf a sudden gust o£ wind struck the. small vessel. This caused part of the sailing- gear to break away, and a 6 Wilfred Cheeaeman went forward to effect repairs he. was struck by the. boom, which swung round with such force as to throw him into the water. Cyril Cheeseman immediately dived, to the resoue, and for a time succeeded in holding up hie brother. A choppy sea, however, ma-dc swimming hard, and eventually the rescuer got into difficulties, and it was only through skilful manoeuvring of the boat that ho was taken aboard, being 'then in an exhausted state. A number of people on the beach witnesEed the accident, 'but although a small boat put out from the shore tha sea. was too rough to render assistance. The younger brother, HarolU; Was slightly injured as a result of the mishap. The deceased was 21 years of ago, and a son of Mr. ari-d Mrs. A; Cheeseman, of Hall-street, Wellington South. He was a tram conductor by occupation, and was very popular among his fellow-worljers, by whom much sympathy is felt for the parents.

Attempts were made yesterday and today to recover the body, but tho condition of the sea hae not been favourable for the work, which was vbein£ supervised by Constables Anderson and Wallace.
