MASON'S GARDENS

BOUGHT FOR SUBDIVISION

CORRESPONDENT'S PROTEST.

It is • stated that the well-known pleasure resort at Lower Hutt, known as Mason's Gardens, has been sold, and is to be subdivided for building purposes. The owner, until a tew weeks ago, was Mr. J. Stellin, of Wellington, who disposed of the property to Mr. R. N. Heppel, of Auckland and' Waitara. He in turn, sold it to Mr. Alfred Cooper, also of Auckland, arid Mr. Cooper, it is reported, has carried out arrangements for subdividing the land. This disposal of Mason's Gardens is strongly resented by many people who have pleasant recollections of the estate. Several correspondents wrote to The Post on the subject some months ago urging that gardens should be conserved for public use for all time. Another correspondent now writes expressing de-ep regret at the prospective subdivision of the property, and urging that such a fine asset should never have been allowed to become lost to the community. He suggests that even now it may not be too late for the gardens' to be rescued for the public, and that the Mayor of Wellinston should at once call a conference of ' representatives of other interested local bodies to discuss the purchase of the property, so that it can be converted into a public reserve.
