RAILWAY FIREMEN
THE THREATENED .STRIKE
PROSPECTS OF SETTLEMENT.
. The executive council of the Enginedrivers, Firemen, and Cleaners' Association is' taking action' with' regard to the threat- of the Wellington district firemen to cease work at midnight to-morrow if their demands for* extra pay and time on account'of the inferior quality of the coal used are not acceded to. The secretary of the association (Mr. W. M'Arley) will meet the firemen to-morrow .morning; and endeavour to induce them to remain at work until the dispute -is settled one way or the other. . The executive of the association will meet in the afternoon. Negotiations are proceeding for a settlement, and it is thought that the men will, accept the advice of the association ,and withdraw their notice for the -resent. The men are said to be annoyed at the delay which they state has taken place in considering their de-mands,-but. witli the prospect of early definite action they will probably reconsider the position. • ■ . -I 1
