But I feel compelled to point out. tho following facts, in view of what has appeared lately in. your paper and in other papers of this city, that in his preface to tho official history of tho part whioh the Now Zealand€rs played in tho Gallipoli campaign. Genera.! Sir lan Hamilton says: "That superb band of New Zcalandcrs, who woro raised front a population of ono. million, and lost' fifteen thousand killed; whereas, to take other standards, tho Belgians, justly fs.mous as having fought so long ami'so valiantly for tho freedom of Europe, lost thirteen. thousand killed out of a population of severi millions." As a matter of fact, . Sir lan Hamilton understated the facts.
