INFANTILE PARALYSIS

NO EPIDEMIC IN CHRISTCHURCH.

OHBISTCHUROH, 20th Jan.; Tha xeferehce in the telegram, from Auckland to "an epidemic of infantile paralysis such as exists in Christchurch" was the subject of a. question addressed to Dr. Telford, Medical Officer of Health for the Canterbury-Westland health district.

-. Dr. Telford said he did not think there was any justification to refer to the casss that had occurred in Christchurch as "an epidemic." It was a limited outbreak, confined to about a dozen cases., All the cases were 'isolated in hospitals, and none remained outside. Thera had been no deaths from the disease, and only some of the cases showed moderate degrees of severity. There was no occasion for any alarm. The disease wa3 prevalent in the Hawke3 Bay district in October, when four cases were notified in two weeks. The Canterbury cases extended over the period from 10th December to the present time.
