Complaints have been made to the police recently that several young men have annoyed passengcre on the harbour ferry steamer Duchess by gambling while passing to and from Eastbourne. A few days ago a plain-clothes constable was detailed to keep a look-out, and for three evenings kept ■» watch on three young men, Basfl H. Roa, Albert E. Roa, and Herbert H: Sullivan, who were engaged. in games of draw poker on the boat. No money was passed, but the nlayers kept a detailed record of the hands. This morning, when they were called before _ Mr. F. K. Hunt; S.M., at the Magistrate's Court on charges of playing a game of chance in a public place, they denied that there was ever any " squaring ud" or intention of doing so; the records, they said, were merely carried on from day to ,day.
