./ Certain recommendations of the Arts and Commerce Committee in regard to the degrees of Arts and Commerce were laid, before the Senate of the University of New Zealand yesterday afternoon. The Senate approved of a recommendation that two subjects should constitute' a section of the Bachelor of Commerce examination. A further recommendation was approved that a supplementary exj amination for the Bachelor of Commerce degree should be held in the month of March, and various provisions for the examination were sanctioned., ..- The Senate decided to grant the request of the • Bank Officers' Guild to establish a Diploma in Banking. The subjects were- generally those of the Bachelor of Commerce cjegree, with speciaJ attention paid to banking. Mr. H. F. yon Haast said .this was an instance where the University was coming into touch with the business world. It' was required that the paper on banking should include : A general elementary" treatment of the subject, including the nature, function, and importance of banks; definitions of banking and mercantile 'terras; banking operations; duties of members of; staff ; qualifications of a successful ■ banker. Every candidate nrust forward a certi: ficate from a .bank manager that he has riot less than two years' practical banking experience. The more advanced, stage of banking was covered- by .a treatment of commercial and. .banking law in two parts/ and the general conduct of banks.
