SOUTHERN RHODESIA
COST OF ADMINISTRATION
AWARD TO CHARTERED COMPANY,
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COFTKIfiHT.) (AUSTRALIAN - NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 21, 1.30 p.m.) , : LONDON, 20th January. A Royal Commission has issued its award on the British South Africa Company's, claim for £7,866,000, under the Privy Council decision, for the administering of the territory to the end of March, 1918. The Commission finds that the amount due is £4,435,000, without interest. ' . [A very important judgment was delivered by the Privy ■. Council in July, Sl9lß, respecting the ownership of 114,000 square miles of territory in Southern Rhodesia. Four claims to ownership had been put in—by the Chartered British South Africa Company, the Crown, the white settlers, and the Natives. The Privy Council had to consider in "detail the whole history of the territory from the time the Chartered Company was allowed to continue administering the laJid after its abandonment by Lobengula. It was decided that the ownership of the land remained in the Crown; but that the company could continue to administer it and could be reimbursed for all proper outlays. The claim which'has been dealt with by the Royal Commis- v sion. arose in consequence of this decision.] . .
