GIRDLESTONE MEMORIAL

Friends of the late Sergeant 'H. EC Girdlestone, -who was killed in France, met last evening to consider a proposal for the erection of a memorial to deCeased, who had been a keen mountaineer and had done.,a great deal to bring before the public the beauties of Tongariro National Park. His enthusiasm, in organising and conducting parties in'the mountains of the park was well known to many, and it was thought that to engrave his name on one of hi* favourite mountain peaks would be to permanently record in this region the name of a comrade- who had made the supreme sacrifice for the Empire. A suggestion that a granite tablet should bVplaced on some high peak in Tongariro Parli was adopted, and it was decided to invite subscriptions from the friends'of the late Sergeant Girdlestone, and for the purpose of carrying out the scheme a committee., consisting 'of Messrs. F.'Gamble, Or. Moix-, D. Isaacs, W. Perry, and H. E. Anderson, was appointed. It was stated that Mr. P. Keller, resident engineer, Public Works Department, Taumarunui, would be willing to organise a. party to nocend the mountain for the purpose of erecting the tablet, which. should, be done not inter than Easter. }
