A SUMMER SHOW
FLOWERS AT. NEWTOWN
The annual show..-of St. Thomas's Horticultural Society was held at St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, yesterday afternoon, and proved tho most successful yet arranged. The show 16 not parochial, but is open to all amateur gardeners. Its aim is to pro-moto-thrift and love of beauty in the homo by encouraging the cultivation of vegetables and flowers. How . something can bo dono in this direction, even in an asphalt yard, was shown by an exhibit of tomatoes planted in kerosene tins and in full bearing. Pupils of South Wellington State ' School had a choice collection of ,flowers and vegetables {frown by tho infant scholars' under supervision of the mistress, Mis^Broadbent. The entries in all classes Ibis year were numerous. The total was 595, compared with 372 last year. The displays in the vegetable andjehildren's classes were particularly good. Tho arrangements made by the secretary (Mr. Cooper), tho treasurer. (Mr. Salmon), and an efficient -.committeb gave every satisfaction. Musical selections' were played by an orchestra under Mr. Turral.
Various stalls were in charge ol the fol-lowing:—Tea-room, Mesdames Baillio and Clarke and Mies Lobb; Mrs, Croll; plants, Miss Startup." The judges' were:—Roees, Mr S. >G. •Pe*rce; carnations, sweet peas, pansics, and violas, Mr. J. J. Kerslake; dahlias and gladioli, Mr. J..G. M'Kenzie:»homesection, Mr. K. A. W Trenker and Mrs. Clark; miscellaneous,, Mrs. Russell, Mr Bell, Mr. Jc-hnßton, and Mr Drummond; ]>ot plants. Mr. J. G.M'Kenzie; ladies' classes and children's classes,. Mrs. Tarrant; vegetable section and fruit, Mr. F. Westbury; ; miscellaneous section, Mr. J G. M'Kenzic. .
