CHEESE FREIGHTS
PRESSING FOR A REDUCTION
A cablegram Teeoived from London yesterday stated: "The action of the Government in raising the freight on New Zealand cheese by l£d per lb is condemned as unjustifiable in view of tho falling freights." The Prime Minister, when shown this message to-day, said ho had no advice o£ any such increase
The position is that the oheeso freight was raised come timo ago to lid. plus 10 per cent. Protests wcro made by the Govornmont. and an offer was recaived of a reduction .to be made. According to advice received by a. leading oxport house tho latest oli'er is lad per lb, plus 10 per cent. The Prime Minister is pressing for a further reduction, and also that the reduction^ bo made retrospective) to all cheese shipped this season. The exporters referred to mako speoial mention of tho work clono by Mr. Massey in securing a reduction of the freight.
The space allotted to cheese has been increased to 150,000 crates for Janunry loading.
