LORD MILNER
AN EMPIRE STATESMAN v
APPRECIATION BY MR. MASSEY.
The Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F. Massey) was asked by a Post reporter to-day for an expression of opinion regarding .the • changes in the Colonial Office, including the retirement' of Lord Milner.
"I regret exceedingly that Lord Milner is retiring from the position of Secretary of State for the Colonies," said Mr. Massey. "He has been one of the best and most painstaking of the many capable men who have occupied that. important position. Lord Milner has a knowledge of the Dominions and Dependencies of the Empire possessed by very few, even of the class whom we speak o"f as Imperial statesmen. Equally important is the fact that he has what may be termed the Imperial instinct, without which no British, statesman can be successful. Every matter with which h& had to^ deal was always looked at from the point of view of the Empire as a whole, and be had: both the experience and 'the judgment necessary in every case to deal with it satisfactorily. I feel that as overseas citizens of: the Empire we owe much to Lord Milner, and I should be very glad to see some arrangement made by. which he would continue to act for the Dominions, because' I am confident our interests would be quite safe in his hands."
