THE REAL PROBLEM
PROVIDING FOR NEW SETTLERS.
(Received January 19, 9 a.m.)
LONDON, 17th January.
Mr. J. M. Hunter, Agent-General for Queensland; in an interview, said the problem was not the getting of immigrants, oi" providing passages, which Britain undertook, but the settling of them in every State.- There were more applicants than shipping was available for, but even if there were sufficient berths the country was unable to settle the immigrants unless either the Commonwealth or the Imperial Government provided funds to settle them or public works. to employ them. Otherwise it would merely mean transferring British unemployed to become Australian unemployed. Under '.the ex-service men's scheme, the Dominions would get all the immigrants they wanted in the next two years free.of expense; but it would be regrettable if Britain and the Dominion failed to co-operate in providing funds for settling them.
