THE NAVAL QUESTION

YON SCHEER'S OPINION

CAPITAL SHIPS STILL WANTED.

(Received January 19, 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, 18th January

The Chicago Tribune's Weimar correspondent interviewed Admiral Yon Scheer, who said the proposals throughout the world to abandon capital shipbuilding in favour of submarines were unwise. It was true that submarines must be developed to the utmost, since the destruction of enemy trade afforded a hitherto undreamed-of defence \i but a great fleet of dreadnoughts was also needed to safeguard the coastlines ajid the submarine bases. Each weapon had its uses, each nation its own coast problems, and each must adopt an individual programme. "The great lesson learned from the war," he said, "is this: sub-marine-owning nation's are practically secure against invasion by sea. Sub-, marines, however, have not killed the capital ship."
