EXCITING ARREST

INCIDENTS UP TO "MOVIE"-

STANDARD.

(?BOH OtIS O-.TM CORBSSKWDMT.)

SYDNEY, 10th January.

A struck between the police and two hooligans in William-street—Sydney's main eastern artery—on Saturday afternoon had all the. trimmings of a firstclass movie drama.

Constable Ward,; on duty in that part of the street that skirts Woolloomooloo, came upon two big men using most indecent language. He proceeded to arrest one. The man fought violently, and his mate helped, him. Ward was* getting a rough time of it when Constable Newton, passing on a tram, saw the fracas and sprang off to Ward's assistance. It ,was then man to man. Ward had got his hoodlum down and conquered ;svheu he saw that Newton had been: beaten. The big ruffian had him down and was .mauling him brutally. .Ward let his man go and went to Newton's'help. He overpowered the hooligan, and had the handcuffs on one wrist when he broke away. He dashed along William-street, handcuffs dangling from one wrist, and Ward in full cry. He drew level with, a milkcart, and. got onto it with one flying leap. Wardi only two hops behind, likewise sprang onto the cait, and the fight was continued there, in th« middle of the crowded street.

Ward .again, got'the upper, hand, and he, ordered'the man to drive to tha Woolloomooloo lockup. He seized the whip with a view to hurrying the horse. But the "hooligan made another effort, broke clear, .lumped down, and leaped onto a tram that was passing. Ward was in hot pursuit, and also leaped onto the tram. The tram, conductor helped the determined young constable to secure his prisoner. ■■'•'.•" • •

Another constable, West^ had approached the prostrate Constable Newton as Ward and- his man ran away. West saw that Newton was sitting- up, and so he dashed off after the secondhoodlum. He lost sight of him in the maze of narrow streets, so he went back to Newton. The.latter had now collapsed, and was unconscious. He was conveyed in %n ambulance to the hospital, where he was found to .be suffering from broken ribs and other injuries.

That evening th« police went to a haunt they knew of, and were able to arrest the second hooligan, who had previously escaped. ■; :
