Mr. X H. Hawthorn, of the Treasury Department, has been promoted to tha position of chief clerk, and Mr. G. 0. Rodda, divisional clerk, to clerk in charge.

Sir Janws Bums, of the shipping fern of Messrs. Burns, Philp, and Co., left for Sydney by the Manuka on Thursday.

Mr. E. Short, the well-known stock breeder, of Feilding, has returned from a health trip to the United States and; Canada.

Mr. W. E. Douglas, Senior Inspector of Machinery, has retired on superannuation after eighteen years' service.

Sergeant M'Gre;{or, of the Central Police Station, ha,-> been transferred' to Timai'u. He left for the South last night.

Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P. for Waitomo, is still indisposed, and has been granted leave of absence for a further three days by the House of Representatives.

A motion expressing sympathy with Mr. W. L. Beech, clerk to the Makara County Council, in his recent sad bereavement, was passed at yesterday's meeting of the council.

Mr. Noel Monkman, who recently left Wellington for Sydney to study the 'cello with James Meseeiis, of the New South Wales Conservateium, has been given the position of 'cellist in the Criterion Theatre Orchestra, Sydney.

Mr. Stuart SeddoE, son, of the late Mr. R. J. Seddon, arrived in Auckland this week by the Niagara from Vancouver. After serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Samoa, Mr. Seddon. proceeded to England and joined the Royal Field Artillery, with which unit he served on the Western Front and in Italy.

The death has occurred at Wellington of Mr. Donald M'Kenzie, youngest son of the late Mr. Murdoch M'Kenzie, of Bumside, Masterton. The deceased leaves a. widow and two sonD (Mr. Hughie M'Kenzie, of Berhampore, and Mr..Barry M'Kenzie, of Sidey-st.). The daughters are Mrs. M'Lennan, Mrs. Stanbridge, and Miss L. M'Kenzie, all of Wellington. Mrs. Annie Andrews, of Mount Albert, Auckland, is sole surviving sister. /

Mr. C. Leydon has retired from the Government Printing Office after twentysix years' service, in order to take up the position of Inspector of Factories at Auckland. Before leaving the Printing Office Mr. Leydon was presented by the Government Printer (Mr. Marcus Marks), on behalf of the otaff, with a suit-case, and, on behalf of "The Old Identities" of the office, with a. smoker's outfit. Mr. Leydon has done valuable service as secretary of the Bookbinders' Union, especially in connection with recent negotiations with the employers. > Mr. Leydon will take up his new position at Auckland early next Week.

The remains of the late Mr. George MacMorran, for vary many years headmaster of the Terrace School, were interred in the Karoxi Cemetery on Thursday. The interment was of a private character. The pall-bearerr were Messrs. P. Young (son of Mr. John Young, Mr. MacMorran's predecessor at the Terrace School), A. Erskine (formany years deceased's assistant master at the school). A. Veitch. and Marcus Marks. Mr. W. E. Jackson (president) and the directors 'of the Victoria. Bowling Club were present, along; with members of the Masonic fraternity (Lodge Waterloo), and representatives of the New Zeaiand Educational Institute. The Rev. J. Paterson officiated at the graveside.

Mr. Matthew Alex. M'Leod, managing director of Radium Polishes, Ltd., died last week at his residence, Wilton-road, Wadustown,. after a fairly long illness. The deceased, who was only 39 years of age, was much respected by a wide cirole of friends, and his capabilities as an energetic business man gained for him a place in commercial circles. He was born at Bristol, England. The late Mi 1. M'Leod commenced in business with his father at Martinborough, and subsequently founded the firm of M'Leod and Sons, a business which has progressed considerably since its formation into a. company and extension to Wellington about 13 years ago The deceased leaves a widow and a family of five young children to mourn their loss.
