FINE GOLF

J. H. KIRKWOOD AT MIRAMAR

The meeting of the Australian and New Zealand champion golfer, J. H. Kirkwood, and the ex-New Zealand champion, Dougla6, in a 36-hole exhibition match on the Miramar course to-day, proved a great attraction to enthusiasts, who followed the play closely in considerable number. Kirkwood's reputation had preceded him, and: Douglas, of course, is well known as an excellent exponent of the game. The course was in iine trim, the greens all specially prepared, and the quality of the golf wa3 admirable. Kirkwood was conspicuous rhiefly for hi 6 uniform straight drives, his direction being perfect, and his "crash" approach shots. His putting was not so good, but as the Miramar course is noted for the variety of its greens, and as the champion was a complete stranger to it, complete accuracy was not to be expected at the start. Douglas aJso gave a splendid display, but was not so consistent as his opponent. The first two holes were halved. Douglas won the third, and Kirkwood the fourth, all square. Kirkwood stymied his opponent at the fifth hole, 1 up. The sixth and seventh holes were again halved. Kirkwood won the eighth, and the ninth was halved, the scores out being Kirkwood 36, Douglas 38; Kirkwood 2 up. On the return home the tenth hole was halved; Kirkwood lost fche eleventh with a bad putt. The twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth were halved. At the fifteenth hole—the "orater"—Douglas's local knowledge stood him in good stead, and he won, making the score all square. Kirkwood won the sixteenth hole with a magnificent long putt; the seventeenth was halved. The last hole gave Kirkwood an opportunity from a beautifullyplaced approach,-and he won the hole in 5, Douglas taking 6. Thus, at the eighteenth hole, Kirkwood was 2 up. The scores home were 38-all, and for the eighteen holes Kirkwood 74, Douglas 76.
