THE COMPETITIONS

DEMONSTRATION CONCERTS,

The second of the "final demonstration" concerts, under the auspices of the Wellington Competitions Society, attracted a. large crowd to the Grand Opera. House last evening and produced a splendid array of talent. Of song, music, elocution, and dancing, there was good measure and variety, but in the matter of quality there waa only one distinctive feature, excellence. The opening number was "Tarantelle," a piano duet, pleasingly played by Misses E. Ives and H. Keane. The several vocalists were much appreciated, Miss Nellie Amies exhibiting a fine mezzo voice in "Good Night, Pretty Stars," and Miss Marjoiie Clark, a soprano, showing much promise by her singing of "She Wandered Down the Mountain Side." Master John Watters, in his character song "Tatters" made a fine impression; and there were numerous others equally successful: — Miss Jean Drew (action recitation, "The Three Bears"), Miss Joyce Julian (skipping dance), Miss Betty Manard:(character recitation, "Mrs. Caudle"), Miss Ivy Middlemiss (recital, with musical accom* paniment, "The Foreign Legion"), Miss Thelma C. Gallaher (piano solo, "Rhapsody No. 8," L^szt), and Mr. P. L. Brady (humorous song, in character), "OH Barty"). The test recital, "Napoleon's Tomb," by Mr. K. S. Dillon was a fine achievement, as also was Miss Florencft Churchill's character recital; "Nydia the Blind Slave Girl," and Miss Doris Clarke's soprano solo "Morning and You. 1* Items by the following met with appreciative applause : —Master Willie Knox (recitation), Miss Guise's pupils (Rose ballet), Miss Lilas Rube (violin solo), Mrs. Le Petit (song, own accompaniment), Mr. A. L. Pickett (Scotch song), Harmonic Quartette Party, Mr. J. J. Deere (Shakespearean recitation), and Messrs. E. P. Tanner and Croxford (piano duet). .Bright dancing wasi given by Master A. Brown and Misses Heather Adair, Thelma M'Kenzie, Jean M'Kenzie, and Amy Ramsay. The accompaniments were played by Mr. Harold Whittle and Miss D. Talbot, and Mr. R. Thompson assisted the dancers.

Another programme of equal merit will be given to-night, this concluding the final demonstrations. The prizes for adult section winners will be presented.
