DUNEDIN, This Day. The Minister of Education is reported as having stated in the House of "Representatives on Thursday that dental bursars were chosen entirely by the university, wheras it is pointed out by the university authorities that the regulation in force (No. 2) states as follows : "Bursars are to make application to the authorities of the Otago Uuiversity, who will forward their recommendation through the Chief Health Officer to the Minister of Public Health for final approval." The Minister also inferred that the geographical distribution of bursaries was unequal. This largely rests with applicants themselves. Applicants from Auckland certainly have more chance of obtaining bursaries than Dunedin students, for the regulations state : "Bursaries will not be conferred upon candidates who reside in Dunedin." As a. matter of fact, two bursaries have been offered to Auckland students recently, who have refused them; another Auckland student holds an Otago dental bursary, and yet another Auckland student is being assisted by tile Otago Repatriation Department, and also holds a. National War Fund bursary. It seems to be evident that if more bursaries are not held by Auckland students it is at least not the fault of the university. As regards advertising the busaries, for the past two years every possible candidate (about 1500) has been circularised and full particulars placed before him, and this will be repeated this year.
