BUTTER 2s lOd TO-DAY
THE SUPPLIES OF NEW MAKE
First-grade butter of new season's make is on sale to-day at 2s lOd. In some cases "old" butter may be obtainable at Is 9d ; but 2s lOd is the price for the new make. Grocers in the Wellington district have to-day received intimation from a leading wholesale butter firm as follows :—"We have pleasure in advisijig that new season's butter will be available from Thursday, 7th October. Under Government control -the' price is fixed at 2s Bd, subject to the usual cartage and discount conditions, as hitherto." A firm which draws supplies direct from factories, and retails at 2d per pound under the regular retail trade price, ran out of old butter yesterday, mid went on to new, selling at 2s 8d per pound. "A Family Man" writes :—"Retailersin Wellington to-day are asking 2s 8d and 2s 10d Xor butter. Does this-mean that the last pound of 'old season' butter has been disposed of? If so. _ why the present price, until the Parliamentary Committee has made its report,-,and_ the new price determined? On inquiries being made at the Board of Trade offices to-day, the only information available was that no attempt had yet been made to fix a maximum price for 'new' butter, and that grocers and others were at liberty to sell at their own prices. Is this not a pretty state of afiairs? Perhaps, Sir, you can inform me how to discriminate, at sight, between 'new' and 'old' batter."
When the Butter Prices Committee reports, probably on Tuesday, it is expected ■ that the Government will not tako more than a day to arrive at a decision respecting the new .price. A careful check is being kept by the Department of Agriculture on,supplies of last season's' butter which are being drawn from store, so that this, shall not be sold at the new season's price.
