THE TERM "INDENTURED."
Speaking iv the Legislative Council yesterday, Sir Francis Bell said the use of the term "indentured" in connection with the Chinese labour for Samoa had misled many people into thinking that some form of slavery was in operation. The days of "blackbirding," however, we're gone bf. Tho present form of indenture simply gave to labour in one country the opportunity to go elsewhere under a propel- contract, governing transit and the period of engagement. The Chinese who were going to Samoa were on their way to a country in which no Judge Was under the influence of the Government, and where there would be no going back on the highest traditions o.f British justice. Was ■ there anyone Who could doubt thnt any petty tyranny which might arise would be put down immediately by the Parliament oil New 1 Zealand
