THE COMPETITIONS
TO-NIGHT'S PROGRAMME
A varied programme of music and elocution has been drawn up for this evening's competitions. There will be ten finals, in which those competitors recalled in the following sections will participate: Humorous recital with accompaniment, vocal duet (ladies), humorous character sketch, girl's song (Begg and Co.'s scholarship), duet in character, Irish song (gentlemen), Shakespearian recitation ("Othello's Defencel'), Burns' song (ladies), bass solo, and vocal duet (lady and gentleman). A story without words, "The Competitions," will be given by the Thespians. FINAL PERFORMANCES. The best talent at the competitions this year, when drawn together, should provide an entertainment of very high standard, and the first programme to be contributed by winners will be submitted to-morrow night. Among the items arranged are : The Bristol scholarship piano solo, humorous recitation, Dickens' character sketch, vocal solo and obbligato, children's chorus, operatic duet, musical monologue, and Highland fling. TO-DAY'S RESULTS. To-day's results, up to the-time of going to press, are:— Baritone or Bass Solo (own selection) Final: Mr. D. M'Gill (Chriatchurch), "Life and Death," 132 points, 1; Mr. R. J. Bryan (Christchurch), "Prince Ivan's Song," 131 points, 2; Mr. S. M. Brewer (Wanganui), "Mine Enemy," 129 points, 3. Fifteen entries. Contralto Solo (own selection). Final: Mrs. Clarice Goldsmith (Wellington), "Salaam," 127 points, 1; Miss Nellie Taylor (Wellington}, "Lie There My Lute," 125 points, 2; Mrs. Dowler (Wellington), "The Fragrance of a Rose," 124 points, 3. Seven entries. Vocal Duet, ladies, open class (own selection). Recalls: Mrs. Henderson and M&s Brammell (Wellington). Misses W. Barnett and N. Wilkinson (Wellington), Misses Doris and Marjorie Clarke (Wellington). Nine entries.
