MINER'S SHOCKING DEATH

WHANGABEI, This Day
Richard Brinsley, a. miner employed at Hikurangi, was cut to pieces this morning by a special goods train. Brinsley, who was deaf, stepped from behind some standing tracks light in front of the engine. He. was a young man, and leaves a. widow and two children.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Appleton left by the !. Moana yesterday on a holiday visit to Australia. Mr. O. J. Hewlett, clerk of the Wei-. Jington Magistrate's Court, is confinedto his bed'with a, severe attack of influenza. . ■ Mr. Oeorgo Frost, senior member .of tho City Council, has been confined to his homo in Brooklyn for some time past. Ho is suffering from an internal trouble, and aJso- an attack of lumbago and measles. His condition is causing his relatives and friends some anxiety. Heavy rain to-day has prevented any cargo being handled on the waterfront, and tho departure, of a. number of vessels will havti to be postponed in consequence. The Leitrim, which was originally due at Wellington this'morning from Auckland, has been meeting with bad weather, and she will not now arrivo until to-moiTow morning. Several coastal steamers due at Wellington have not put in an appearance, and are ap- i patently sheltering on the coast. ' !
The funeral of ihe late Mr. John "VVelsby look place yesterday morning, Canon Foilden Taylor conducting the service at the graveside. Only very near relatives .were present, including Mr. Vaughan Welsby fyoungest son). Mr. Ctrl Sngstrom, of Masterton (son-in-law), and. Mr. F. do J. Clere (Brother-in-law). Tho late Mr. Welsby was educated at Wigton College and was a very clever matheluatkian. He married ,the eldest daughter o* the l»t» Henry Clere, M.A., formerly vicar of Twickenham. Dr. C. B. Welsby, a son of the deceased, is at present in,- England..
