TRAMWAY PROPOSALS
THE CITY LOAN.
TO IHE EDITOR,
Sir,—Speaking on behalf of the Te Aro Association at the meeting of ratepayers held last night in tne Town Hall, I asked the Mayor why all- the tramway proposals were not put under one heading instead of three, viz., Tramways General £664,887, 'Kelburn Extension £66,986, and Melrose Extension £12,900. Was it because the council was dubious of its proposals, or did it really want these three items agreed to? Why include the amount of £13,000 for the Kaiwarra ' Extension in the Tramways Genera] and leave out the Melrose Extension amount? I also stated that we did not approve of the Victoria-street track, to cost £.30,000, and suggested that this could be spent to more advantage in extending the Wallace-street line to John-street,., and make provision for a quick service from the railway stations to the southern portion of the city, via Lambton-quay or ,Jervois-quay, Cuba-street, and Wallacestreet. Another aspect of this route to bo considered is that Te Aro is practically the centre of the city, and ©very possible facility should be' given "to the residents of such places as Newtown,' Lyall. Bay, and Island Bay to get to the city by the shortest, quickest, and cheapest route. In saying cheapest, I YrhtL Ui point out that residents of theso suburbs could then get to the centre of che city at a saving of one section as against the present roundabout way oi me Basin Reserve and Courtenay-place. To give the people of Wellington an idea of the small amount of work we are asking -th». council to do in >.con.necting the Wallace'-sireet Jfne ■to JoKn-street, we are having printed for evrculatioTi some thousands of leaflets and maps on which will be shown the tramway system and the portion we want linked up. This will show the advantage to be derived by the residents of the southern portion of the city, and at a small outlay.—l am, etc., T. P. HAI/PIN, Chairman, Te Aro Advancement Association.
