FROZEN MEAT MARKET.
Gilbert Anderson, Ltd., reporting under date London, Ist June, state that Australasian mutton Is the chief topic of the trade, and the last month has certainly seen some changes in the distribution of this article. On 3rd May individual stall-holders at Smlthfleld were at liberty to buy their requirements from importers on the basis of Od per lb, dolivered market for v \vetliers and ewes, Is Id per lb for lamb less 21 per cent, commission. With deliveries irregular as to size and condition 6t meat many womd-be enterprising firms found that they had to sell under the price to clear before the closo of market, and so" sales were far from numerous. On the 17th May the Food Controller again took over from the Board of Trade tho responsibility ot clearing the imported meat, and New Zealand prices were altered as follows:—Cut ewes, 7d per lb; unoufc do,,.Sd per lb; cut wethers and tegs, 8d per lb; uncut do., Od per !b, The schedule prices order for cut joints was revoked and commission to wholesalers increased to 8d per stone." Undoubtedly this alteration has. been an Incentivo to buyers to operate, and there has boon a marked increase jn the demand for mutton—our sales alone of mutton in London from tha 17th to the 20th in3tant amounting to 80,000 carcases. Although stale New Zea. hind lamba are selling freely at Is Id pep |v" straight bright lambs would fetch high prices In the absence of control, ;
