PRAMS ON TRAMS

ALLOWED IN WELLINGTON.

The statement has been published that folding perambulators tad go-carts are not allowed on the Auckland trariicars j and it was also stated, on the authority of the manager of the Auckland tramways, that Government regulations about to be issued would necessitate the discontinuance of this concession in Wellington.

A Post representative was informed today that the regulations in question do not contain any specific reference to folding penunbulatorß or go-carts, but merely provide against the carriage of luggage or material which unduly hammered ingress or egress. The Mayor' (Mr. J. P. Luke) said that conditions regarding; the tramway services in Wellington differed, very considerably from those at Auckland. "There are many conditions here which do not obtain there," he said. "Hero ws have,. for instance, tunnel traffic. Is the, Government or any other responsible body going to say that mothers of children living in the suburbs which are reached by tunnel must come into town and do business without the convenience of having their go-cai-ts, but must carry their children in their arms all day, or else." walk in with their prams? Such a, thing would be beyond my comprehension ! TJiere is also the fact that the grades in Wellington generally are so acute that,, unless facilities are given mothers to bring a perambulator or gocart on the trams their lot would be very difficult. I appreciate very much, the difficulties under which conductors sometimes work; but it is to -be hoped that pressure for hew conditions is not emanating.from any section of the community, which shodld be just as much, concerned for . comfortable facilitias for mothers in this respect-as anyone." ■
