CHESS NOTES
The chess "rally" that was to have been held at Masterton during the Easter holidays, has been abandoned owing to tho lack of support. Three Wellington clubs were prepared to take part, but teams were not forthcoming from Wanganui and Pa-lmerston North, and there was considerable lukewarmness in the Walrarapa itself. Feeling that the adverse tide was more than he could stem, Mr. Clemas, the Masterton lion, secretary, reluctantly abandoned the idea of holding a " rally" this year. A team from tne Wellington Working Men's Club is scheduled to leave on Good Friday for Palmerston North to play a two-round match with the local club during the coming holidays. * The Auckland Chess Club has suggested Ist and Bth May as the dates for its projected telegraphic match against the Masterton Chess Club. ■ Messrs. Purchas, G. P. Anderson, and S. Faulknor are the favourites for first place in the South Wellington Chess Club's current championship tourney— the play in which has dragged somewhat during the past month. The tourney to decide the Ngaio Chess Club's championship, for 1920 is rapidly approaching completion. The issue, which is narrowed down to Messrs. GF^A. Jones and F. J. Brooker. will be available for the annual meeting.if the three i outstanding games are disposed _of promptly, viz., Jones v. Topp and Lindsay and' Brooker v. James. -
