CHARGE AGAINST A SCHOOLMASTER
(« TBIB6RAPB.- PRES.' ASSOCIATION} NELSON, 30th March. _ A country schoolmaster was charged in the Magistrate's Court with ill-treating a boy of 11 years by cutting one of his fingers with "a knife. . The injury was inflicted during a lesson on lizards, the child having said he would like to see a lizard's tail cut off. The teacher, in giving evidence, said that he scratched the boy's finger thinking that that would impress upon his mind that he should not be cruel to animals. The Magistrate ! (Mr. Mauneell), in giving judgment, said that the cut 'was more than a scratch, but was not a substantial injury. Defendant, was not justified in using a sharp instrument, and his discretion had not been wisely used. It would, however, be straining the language of the Act to say that the child had been illtreated. The information was dismissed.
