LONDON MARKETS

The Department of Agriculture has re. ceived the following cablegrams, dated 18th and 20th instant respectively, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London :— "Eleventh series Government wool sales commenced Monday night with unusually large attendance buyers, and good competition from all sections of outtrade. Compared with closing rates last series merinos and fine crossbreds ruled about 5 per cent, dearer; medium and inferior crossbreds unchanged, but they have improved since opening. They are at present selling at par to 5 per cent, dearer. One hundred thousand bales shown wools are available for series, of which 28,500 are New Zealand; also 19,600 bales on description, none of •which are New Zealand." ' Butter.—No change in price from Go-vernment-controlled, butter, selling at £15 3s 4d cwt wholesale, and 3s lb retail. English free butter average price is 3s 94 per lb wholesale. From 31st March Irish butter will not be controlled, and then can be sold without any restrictions. Hemp.—Manila market quiet, and ;prices slightly weaker. During this week "J" grade, January-March shipment, sold £72. Present quotations are : January-March shipment, £71 ■ March-May shipment, £69 buyers.- New Zealand market quiet. Present quotations are : On spot, higlipoints, £65; fair (mutilated word), £60; FebruaryApril shipment, £60 and £58 respectively. Wool.—Market firm, and prices stiffening.
