TO COST 105 MILLIONS
ABSORPTION OF DEMOBILISED MEN
THE SOLDIERS' GRATUITY.

The total cost of pensions during the current financial year is £104.899,000. Unemployment has steadily declined for many weeks. Ninety per cent, of the demobilised men have .been absorbed, and the only Increases are due to the ironmoulders' strike. There is a niarked improvement in London, Birmingham, and Glasgow. Mr. Lloyd George, replying to the Discharged Soldiers' Federation, points out that the Treasury has definitely decided that the gratuities cannot be increased. The Government had done everything possible to assist the demobilised men to obtain employment, and the present position cannot be regarded as unsatisfactory. Out of 4g millions demobilised, 335,000 are receiving the unemployment donation.
