MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. E. Pagej S.M., presided over this 'morning's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. . Four first-offenders for drunkenness were each fined the amount of their bail (10s). Two others were each fined ss, the alternative being 24 hours' imprisonment. A prohibition order was issued against Lillian PJayter. For a breach of a prohibition order, Nora Nugent was fined £2, and for drunkenness 10s. For disorderly behaviour whilst drunk on the Queen's Wharf, James Sydney Rogan was fined £1, invdefault 48 hours' imprisonment, and for having broken a window, valued at 12s, the property of the Wellington Harbour Board, the same defendant was fined £2, and ordered to pay the amount of damage, the option ■being fixed at seven days' imprisonment. John Shand and Then s Kerwin appeared to answer charges of theft of goods valued at 8s and 14s 6d respectively, the property of the Union Steamship Company. A remand was granted until Wednesday next. Bail in each case was fixed at £40. A charge of having attempted to commit suicide was preferred against .Alexander Burnett. The offence was committed at the accused's house, in Rug-by-street, on the sth inst., and since then Burnett had been receiving treattneut at the Hospital. Sub-Inspector Emerson stated that Burnett, who had evidently been worried by family trouble and had 'been indulging in liquor, had cut his throat with a, razor. He was a married man, and had been a tailor by occupation. Questioned by the Magistrate, the accused pleaded guilty, and expressed sorrow, explaining that he had been troubled, more so because of an operation he had undergone about a year ago. The accused was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. He would also be required to pay £1 11s 6d medical expenses, and :to tako out a prohibition order against himsslf.
