A FALSE STATEMENT
MADE REGARDING BARMAID'S
CERTIFICATE.
In the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, Alice Fabian was charged, with that on 19th March last she made a false declaration, which on oath would amount to perjury in a judicial proceeding It was alleged that accused declared before a J.P that her name was Maggie M'Grath, and that she had been registered as a barmaid at, the Waverley Hotel, Auckland. She further stated, it was alleged, that she destroyed her j certificate while burning some old papers, and did not miss her certificate until a few da.ys after she had burnt the papers, the accused well knowing such statements to be contrary to fact. Mr.- W. G Biddell was on the bench. Sub-Inspector Emnrson appeared foi' the police, and Mr. P.. W Jackson represented the accused. Robert William Armit, a Justice of the Pence, said that accused came to him, and stated that she had lost her certificate, and asked that another should bo issued. She made a. declaration that her statement was correct. Henry Ernest Mostoh, deputy inspector of factories, said thai on 19th March accused camo to him and gave her name as Miss M'Grath. She stated that she wished to secure another certificate, as the original had been lost. Witness told her that she would have to make a declaraition. This she did, and on 21st March a certificate was issued. Ella M'Donald, mother of the licensee, of the Central Hotel, Wellington, said that when accused took up the position of barmaid ait the hotel, she gave the name of M'Grath. Other formal evidence was also given. Accused pleaded guilty to tho charge, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed in the sum of £25 with one surety of £25
