MUNICIPAL FREIGHT SERVICE
Regarding the municipal freight service as given by,.the tramway department, the General Manager of the department (Mr. 'W. H. Morton) in his annual report, states :— "Although there has been a steady expansion in the business of the freight department, the results of the last year's working do not show an increase on the figures of the preceding year, due largely to the severe curtailment of the service which occurred during the epidemic, when it was found necessary to requisition for some weeks the motor vehicles for the conveyance of patients to and from emergency hospitals. The service has now reached a stage when additional and improved depot facilities will require to be provided if further development is to take place. The provision of/ a depot with a platform siding in a suitable position in the city, and two or threa "'sidings in .the outlying suburbs, would enable a large amount of goods, building material, and, if necessary, coal, to be handled at a lower rate than by niotor or horse haulage."- ,
