HOT LUNCHES IN SCHOOLS

The question of providing hot luncheons in schools for the children attending was mentioned at the meeting of tho Wellington Education Board to-day. A letter was read from the' Education Department urging the board to encourage the giving of hot luncheons in the schools. .

Mr. R. M'Calkim said the system was already working well in many of the country districts. Mr; Stewart,' secretary of tho board, said several schools had adopted the system of providing hot lunches by means of co-operation between the staffs, committees, and pupils. In a number of cases schools had asked for a grant for such purpose. A member said grants had been aaked for where facilities did not exist for providing hot tea, cocoa, etc. Tho Chairman (Mr. T. Forsyth) said the board had no funds from which such grants could be made.

Mr. Harkness complained that there wa« great difficulty in getting coal for heating the schools in the various country districts.

■A member : But you can get wood. Mr. Harkuess replied that this was impossible with wood at 45s per cord. The secretary said the matter could be arranged if the school committees would communicate with him and would guarantee that the coal sent was used for none other than the purpose intended. ■ '■
