COACH ACCIDENT

IN OTIRA GORGE

TWO MEN SEVERELY INJURED

GREYMOUTH, 17th June.

An accident occurred in the Otira Gorge to-day at 3 p.m. to one of the mail coaches, which was on the return trip from Arthur's Pass. When about three miles from Otira, at a place known as Candy's Hut, a steep hill, one horse is understood to have fallen, precipitating the vehicle against an embankment and scattering the passengers .in all directions. Two men were severely injured and three others suffered minor injuries. The first-mentioned are Mr. Wells (of Woodstock, Westland), whose back was severely hurt, and Mr. King (of Invercargill), who has an injury to the shoulder blade and arm. Two horses out of the five were lost.

The mails were on this coach, but were not damaged. The train was delayed at Otira for an hour, and brought all the sufferers to Greymouth. Dr. Johnston, the new Grey River Hospital Superintendent, was making the overland journey and rendered aid to tbe injured.
