LANDS ADMINISTRATION

A conference of Commissioners of Crown Lands, which has been sitting in Wellington, concluded its business yesterday. The Minister of Lands (Hon. D. H. Guthrie), referring to the work of the conference, said' that questions of great importance pertaining to the Lands adminstra'tion of the' country had been discussed, and the general impression of Commissioners had been that the time had been well spent, and that the interchange of opinion on administrative matters must bring about more uniformity in the future. It appeared that all were anxious to ascertain the best methods in use in any districts; with a view-to their adoption in all districts. ,

The agenda paper brought to the conference by the Minister contained' the following headings for discussion :— "Delays in the Transaction of Business," "Shortage of Staffs," "Returned Soldiers' Settlement," "Strengthening and Popularising the Land Purchase Board," "The Appointment of Supervisors for Returned Soldiers' Settlements;" "The Constitution of the Classification Commissioners' Board," and the questions of how best to deal with the following problems: — Close settlement of land ; the iitilisation of dry lands, swamp lands, pumice lands; gum. lands, and high country.
