A very old ruse was resorted to by a youth named Arthur Edward Pearcy to cover up his tracks after he had stolen a fellow-workman's watch, but fortunately for 'the fellow-workman, Constable C. Joss, who made the arrest, had "been there before," and the youth's protestations led to his undoing. As admitted by Pearcy, ho had been employed at the Wellington Timber Company's yards, and a few days ago had taken advantage of a quiet moment to go through the pockets of a coat hanging in the yard. He left work that afternoon temporarily the richer by the possession of Andrew Gardiner's watch, ■ valued at £3 10s. ' Gardiner made a complaint, and in due course the constable arrivodon tha scene. Pearcy at once complaindad that he, too, had been robbed of a soaman's wallet, but his answers to questions were unsatisfactory, and finally he confessed that he had the watch at home. Mr. F. V.
