HIDES AND SKINS
BOARD OF TRADE AND THE EMBARGO. (JI TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATIONS AUCKLAND, This Day. The embargo upon the eicport of hides and calfskins was the subject of a statement by the Board of Trade. The embargo was not absolute, it was stated, and permits for export would be granted for all hides and calfskins not required for New Zealand tanners. The object of the regulations was to provide that tanners should have their requirements met. The prices for hides, fixed at the old Imperial schedule, it is stated, wero considered to be fair by producers, and had been advanced since the board considered that, in the interests of consumers generally^ hide prices should be controlled, as leather prices were subject to sharp fluctuations, and necessarily prices of footwear showed an advancing tendency. Also, another main reason for the action taken by the board was to protect its standardisation of the footwear scheme.
