EDUCATIONAL BEQUESTS
THE MATTER OF GOVERNMENT
SUBSIDIES.
IST TBLBOBAPn.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
DUNEDIN, This Day.
At a meeting of the University Council, the Chancellor remarked that in the course of time the bequest to the Otago University under the will of the late Mr. Donald Reid might be worth £50,000 or more. A member pointed out that the Government subsidy was only £500; He had never been able to discover why there should be any difference between a grant made to a University during a man's lifetime and a bequest under his will. . The Chancellor said the council had previously asked the Government to amend the regulations, so as to be able to give the full amount of £ for £. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee, with the view of again asking the Government to amend the regulations.
